Few photographs capture a meeting between a president and an explorer whose achievement had long gone unrecognized, but this 1954 print does. Matthew Henson, who sailed with Robert Peary on his Arctic expeditions, points out the North Pole on a globe for President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the White House, while Henson's wife, Lucy, looks on. Henson had reached the pole with Peary's party in 1909, yet for decades he received little official credit, so the visit marked a belated public acknowledgment shortly before his death in 1955.
