Perry stands three-quarter length with his left hand resting on his sword, a pose that presents him as a naval officer rather than a simple portrait sitter. The albumen carte de visite was made in the studio of Mathew Brady, and a pencilled note on the mount credits E. Anthony as publisher. The card dates from the years just after Perry's 1852-1854 expedition to Japan, which produced the Treaty of Kanagawa and made him a national figure. Cartes de visite like this one were sold in large numbers, so the image helped spread his likeness during that period.
