Few places in North America carry as much military history as the Plains of Abraham, the open ground on the cliffs above Quebec City where British forces under James Wolfe defeated the French under the Marquis de Montcalm in 1759, a battle that decided control of New France. Both commanders died in the fighting. This lithotint, dated by the Library of Congress to roughly 1850 to 1870, offers a bird's-eye view of the site, a vantage that shows how the plains sat above the St. Lawrence and the old city. By the mid-nineteenth century the battlefield had become a public open space, and such views helped audiences picture a landscape that was already rich in memory.
