Dressed in a fur hat and heavy fur coat, Matthew Alexander Henson faces the camera in this head-and-shoulders portrait made around 1910, the year after he reached the North Pole with Robert E. Peary in 1909. Henson, born in 1866, spent years in the Arctic as Peary's companion and assistant, and his skill with dog teams and his working knowledge of Inuit languages were essential to the expeditions. The clothing reflects the polar gear of the period, and the print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which helped put images of an explorer whose contributions were long overlooked into wider circulation.
