Peary stands full length, turned to the left, handing out gifts to Inuit people in Greenland, either from a ship's deck or from a dock. The scene reflects the exchanges that shaped his Arctic work. Beginning in the late 1880s, he used Greenland as a base for expeditions across the ice, and he depended on local hunters, dog drivers, and knowledge of cold-weather travel. Gifts of the kind explorers commonly offered were one part of those relationships. Peary is best known for his 1909 claim to have reached the North Pole, a claim that has been disputed ever since.
