Matthew Henson is shown here in a head-and-shoulders portrait, facing the camera and holding a picture of Robert E. Peary, the naval officer he served as a companion on Arctic expeditions. Henson was the African American explorer who traveled with Peary on the journeys that reached the North Pole in 1909, a claim that has been debated ever since. This 1953 print comes from the New York World-Telegram and Sun collection, made when Henson was in his late eighties and still drawing public attention for his role in polar exploration.
