Robert E. Peary is pictured on the main deck of the steamship Roosevelt, a ship built for his Arctic voyages and named for President Theodore Roosevelt, who supported the expeditions. The photograph dates to about 1909, the year Peary announced he had reached the North Pole, a claim other researchers later disputed. The print carries a copyright notice for the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large output of American views in this period. Its ordinary deck setting makes a quiet contrast with the polar race it belonged to.
