The winter entry in the *American Country Life* series turns the season into a scene of rural household routine rather than a single event, which sets it apart from the other seasons on this board. Images in this vein were produced in quantity by commercial lithography firms such as Currier & Ives in the mid-1800s, when color prints of farm and village life were popular in American parlors. Such prints were meant to be read as a portrait of everyday country living, and their cold-season subjects often reflect the slower pace of the farm calendar, when outdoor work gave way to indoor chores and social gatherings.
