Published in Philadelphia around 1867 by Joseph Hoover, this color lithograph puts horses and sleighs at the center of a winter scene. Sleighing was a favorite cold-weather pastime in the nineteenth century, and color lithography made such pictures cheap enough to hang in ordinary homes. Printmakers of the period, most famously Currier & Ives in New York, sold many snowy scenes like this one, so Hoover's print belongs to a busy market for seasonal images.
