Titled simply *Winter pastime*, this lithograph belongs to the outdoor leisure scenes that helped make Currier & Ives famous. Published in New York around 1855, it was designed by Frances F. Palmer, who drew a large share of the firm's rural and sentimental images of American life. Prints like this were inexpensive and widely sold, meant for middle-class parlors, and they offer a useful view of how city families pictured the pleasures of the cold season.
