Rather than a battle, this sheet shows the Army of the Potomac bogged down near Falmouth, Virginia, during Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside's failed late-January 1863 push toward the Rappahannock River, an episode soldiers called the Mud March. Alfred R. Waud, a staff artist for *Harper's Weekly*, signed the drawing and sent field sketches like this one to be engraved, and it ran in the February 14, 1863 issue under a caption describing the fruitless attempt. The pencil and white heightening on tan paper give the scene a muted, wintry tone that suits its subject.
