Drawn at Stoneman's Switch near Falmouth, Virginia, and dated January 25, 1863, this pencil sketch shows a Union winter camp as the Army of the Potomac settled in on the Rappahannock after its defeat at Fredericksburg that December. Soldiers in such camps built log and plank huts, roofed them with canvas or boards, and chinked the gaps with mud, since they expected to stay for months. Pencil was a quick, portable medium for field sketches made from life, and the huts it records show how a temporary encampment could take on the feel of a village.
