Peihai Park, the former imperial garden in Peking (now Beijing), appears here in winter, with bare trees and skaters gliding across the frozen lake. The print was issued in 1956 by the Foreign Language Press in Peking, which produced illustrated material for readers abroad after the People's Republic was founded in 1949. Ku Yuan worked in the color woodcut tradition that grew out of the New Woodcut Movement of the 1930s, and winter recreation like this was a common subject of the period, showing ordinary city life as part of a new national culture.
