This 1859 view looks north from the Capitol's east front while the cast-iron dome is still taking shape above the building's center. Benjamin Brown French, who oversaw public buildings in Washington at the time, kept the print in his own album, which helps explain its close attention to the construction work. It is a salted paper print, an early process that was giving way to albumen by the late 1850s, so its soft tones and exposed framing make it a useful record of both the building and the photography of its day.
