Sumac bushes standing against a field of snow give this 1983 color woodcut its subject, and the contrast of dark, angular stems against white ground sets the scene apart from more generic winter views. G. Mortensen signed this impression in pencil, and it is numbered 130 of an edition of 160. Woodcut artists of the late twentieth century often built a color print from several carved blocks, each inked separately and printed in register, so every hue in the image depends on careful alignment. The winter theme also fits a long tradition of seasonal landscape, in which snow simplifies a scene to its essential shapes.
