A Harper's Magazine poster is what sets this one apart from the other winter scenes on the board. It advertises Caspar Whitney's article "On Snow Shoes to the Barren Grounds," a account of travel across the treeless tundra of northern Canada. Edward Penfield, a leading American poster designer of the 1890s, made it during the years when magazine posters were a popular form of street advertising. His flat areas of color and bold silhouettes make the snowshoer easy to read from a distance, which suited a poster meant to catch the eye of passersby.
