Edward Penfield's 1896 poster for the August issue of *Harper's* advertises a new Mark Twain story, "Tom Sawyer, Detective," in its caption, while the image shows fashionable summer leisure, with women and men in bathing suits and light summer dress. Penfield was one of the most prominent American poster designers of the 1890s, and his work for *Harper's* used flat fields of color and bold silhouettes to stand out on newsstands. Magazine posters like this were a relatively new form of advertising at the time, and they now preserve a record of the clothing and seaside styles of the decade.
