Edward Penfield's 1893 color lithograph advertises the August issue of *Harper's*, and it was built to catch the eye of passersby on city streets. Penfield was one of the leading American poster designers of the 1890s, and his work for *Harper's* helped establish the flat color areas, bold outlines, and simplified figures that defined the period's poster style. The subject, men in social life, reflects the leisure culture of the decade, when illustrated magazines reached a wide middle-class readership. The print is worth studying for how little detail it needs to get its message across at a glance.
