A Black woman works in a field of wheat, her harvest labor set in flat, bold color. The print belongs to a 1938 set of monthly calendar posters made under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, which employed artists during the Great Depression and used silkscreen to produce inexpensive public images. Each month in the series pairs with a seasonal task, and the figure in the field reflects the many African American women who did agricultural work in the rural South and elsewhere in the 1930s.
