Among the months in a WPA calendar series, July stands out for its subject: a summer scene of sunbathing and leisure, rather than the work, civic, or public health themes that filled much of the program's poster output. The Federal Art Project used silkscreen, a method suited to bold, flat color, to make inexpensive prints that could reach a wide public, and the calendar format carried such images into homes and offices. The print is catalogued in DeNoon's 1987 survey *Posters of the WPA*, which documents the program's design work across the decade.
