Rendered in silkscreen, this April design is a calendar poster from the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, a Depression-era program that employed artists to make inexpensive public art. Instead of blossoms, its subject is spring weather: trees, heavy clouds, and falling rain fill the composition with a moody, rain-soaked character. Screen printing allowed bold, flat areas of color to be produced in quantity, and posters like this one helped bring modern graphic design into everyday public spaces. The series is catalogued in Christopher DeNoon's *Posters of the WPA*.
