This January print stands out for its reindeer, which appear alongside a blizzard in a scene that pairs animals with the harshest weather of the year. It is a silkscreen, a color process the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration used in the late 1930s to make inexpensive posters and calendar art, employing artists during the Depression. The image comes from a series of monthly designs, and its catalog record places it in the Christopher DeNoon volume on WPA posters, a reminder of how the program turned ordinary seasonal themes into bold, flat graphic images meant for wide public display.
