A skier cutting through snow anchors this February design, a winter subject that sets it apart from the other months in the series. It was made as a color silkscreen during the late 1930s, when the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project employed artists across the country and turned the stencil-based process into a practical way to produce inexpensive, bold images in bulk. Calendar designs like this one were meant to be pinned on walls and read at a glance, and the flat areas of color and simplified shapes show how the medium suited that purpose.
