Apple trees and a cider press set this October apart from the other months on the board, marking the autumn harvest as a season of gathering and pressing. The print is a silkscreen, a stencil process the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration used in the late 1930s to produce inexpensive color posters and calendars in quantity. Such works were meant to bring art into schools, post offices and homes during the Depression, and this example shows how the program turned ordinary rural labor into a public image.
