Here the subject is simply people skating on ice, a plain outdoor scene that gives no further detail about the place. The print is a chromolithograph by L. Prang & Co., the Boston firm that did much to popularize color printing in America, after a watercolor by Hy Sandham, a Canadian-born painter and illustrator. Issued around 1885, it reflects the late-century appetite for affordable colored pictures of winter pastimes, built up from a separate stone for each hue.
