Jamaica Pond, in the Jamaicaway section of Boston's Emerald Necklace, has drawn winter skaters for well over a century, and this view places the ice in its wooded West Roxbury setting. The pond was part of the park system laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted and his partners in the late 1800s, a planned landscape meant to give city residents green space within reach. When the water froze hard enough, the pond became one of the region's most popular public skating grounds, with families, students and office workers gliding across the same surface. Look at how the figures are spread across the ice and how the bare trees frame the scene, which show the pond as a place of simple seasonal leisure.
