Few objects connect Boston's colonial past as directly as the seal of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, captured here on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative. The province operated under a royal charter from 1691 until the American Revolution, and its seal, which shows a Native American figure with a bow and the words "Come over and help us," appeared on official colonial documents. The Detroit Publishing Company made this negative sometime between 1900 and 1910, and its catalog notes suggest the seal may have been photographed at the Old State House, where colonial authorities once met.
