Sledders racing down a snowy slope on toboggans give this 1886 chromolithograph its subject, drawn from a design by Hy Sandham and printed by L. Prang & Co. of Boston. The toboggan, a long, low sled with a curled front, came into fashion in North America in the 1880s as a winter pastime for people of all ages, and the image captures that sense of shared outdoor fun. Prang was known for color prints of this kind, which were made in large runs with multiple stones, each adding a layer of tint, so that the snow, sky, and clothing look richly colored.
