This 1936 silkscreen poster, signed with the initials J.P., invites New Yorkers to enjoy ice and roller skating, two winter pastimes it presents side by side. It was produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists during the Depression to make posters for public events, classes and recreation programs. The New York silkscreen unit helped develop the medium for poster work, using flat, bold color that could be printed affordably in quantity and read quickly from the street. Its cheerful, modern style reflects the period's effort to offer inexpensive leisure to city residents.
