Ellis Island, in New York Harbor, served as the main federal processing station for immigrants arriving in the United States from 1892 to 1954, and this glass negative records the island itself rather than a particular scene or person. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that circulated pictures of news events and places to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title was assigned from data written on the negative or its caption card and has not been independently verified, so the exact date and vantage point are uncertain. Its glass-plate format is typical of the period, when photographers captured large, finely detailed images on fragile plates.
