A party associated with President William Howard Taft is the subject of this view, taken on Ellis Island in New York Harbor. The island had served as the main federal processing station for arriving immigrants since 1892, so a presidential visit there tied official business to the nation's immigration story. The glass negative is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photographer whose agency supplied pictures of public figures and city life to newspapers. The title comes from caption information recorded by the Bain agency, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified.
