Theodore Roosevelt posed with his family in this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs assembled by the Bain News Service in New York in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption information that the service supplied and that has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion is unknown. Bain's studio worked quickly to supply newspapers and magazines with images of public figures, and portraits of the Roosevelt household were in steady demand during his presidency from 1901 to 1909. The glass plate format of the collection is itself worth noticing, since it reflects how news photographs were made and shared before the wide use of film and print syndication.
