Few places are as closely tied to Theodore Roosevelt as Oyster Bay, the Long Island village where he kept his Sagamore Hill home and where he died in January 1919. This negative shows arrivals in the village for his funeral, held a few days after his death, when relatives, public figures and private mourners gathered to pay their respects. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose glass negatives make up this collection, covered such events for newspapers at the time. The record does not name the people pictured, so the scene is best read as part of the wider public mourning for the former president.
