Theodore and Edith Roosevelt sit on a lawn with their children gathered around them, a domestic scene at a time when the family's White House years were beginning. Theodore Roosevelt became president in September 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, and the Roosevelts were raising a large household that included six children from Theodore's marriages and the family's young sons and daughters. The picture is a Library of Congress print from about 1903, registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, and it reflects the era's taste for posed group portraits that presented presidents as devoted family men.
