Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, wife of Theodore Roosevelt, sits at a desk in this three-quarters length portrait, turned squarely toward the camera. The photograph was taken between 1900 and 1910, during the years her husband held the presidency and she served as First Lady, though the print itself was made later, as the record's 1950 to 1970 date indicates. It belongs to the Brady-Handy Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of 19th- and early 20th-century portraits of notable Americans assembled from the studios of Mathew Brady and Levin Handy. Her formal, upright pose at a writing desk reflects the conventions of official portraiture of the period.
