Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, wife of Theodore Roosevelt, sits for this studio portrait by the C.M. Bell Photographic Company of Washington, D.C., dated around 1904. Bell's studio was one of the city's best-known portrait houses, and its carefully posed sittings were widely sold to the public and to officials. The picture dates from the period when Theodore Roosevelt was president and the Roosevelts were living in the White House, and Edith Roosevelt, who managed the household and its social calendar, was a familiar public figure. The copyright notation on the record shows the image was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why it survives in the Library of Congress collection.
