Women carrying baskets through a crowded market give this monotype its subject, and the record dates it to roughly 1899 to 1901, when Maurice Brazil Prendergast was working in Italy. He made many small monotypes during those years, painting in oil on a sheet of glass or metal and pressing it onto paper so that each impression came out softer and looser than a finished canvas. The market and the working women who fill it were common subjects for him, and the color, movement, and rapid handling of the figures show how far he had moved toward the vivid, decorative style that defined his later work.
