Peggy Bacon's "Rural Retreat" is a 1930 lithograph that shows a rustic tavern and the people who gather inside it, with the subjects of taverns, country life, families, and eating and drinking all bound up in the scene. Bacon, an American printmaker and illustrator known for her sharp, observant draftsmanship, drew many such scenes of everyday American life between the wars. The print's pencil signature, title, and date were added by hand, and it was later exhibited at the Library of Congress in 1999 as part of a show of realist prints from the Goldstein Collection.
