The bold color of this silkscreen sets its bargain store apart, advertising a five-and-ten-cent shop that sold everyday goods at low fixed prices, much like the chains of the day such as Woolworth's and Kresge. It was made by the Federal Art Project in New York, part of the Works Progress Administration's effort to employ artists during the Depression. Silkscreen suited the program because it could turn out bright, inexpensive designs in quantity. A May 24, 1941 date stamp on the back places its use late in the project's run.
