The poster's caption explains that this is the market where a storekeeper buys food and carries it back to his shop, so the image presents wholesale buying as an everyday link in the local food supply. Theodore Ward made it in 1936 as part of the Work Projects Administration's poster program, which hired artists during the Depression to produce public information posters. Silkscreen, the printing method used here, was still a relatively new technique for fine-art printmaking, and the WPA's silkscreen units helped establish it for posters. The back of this copy bears a April 1937 date stamp, showing it passed through an office or distribution channel within a year of its design.
