A full-length daguerreotype shows a peddler standing squarely to the camera, with two bags hung at his sides from a harness, and the neck strap that supports them visible between his legs. Peddlers of the 1840s and 1850s carried their stock on foot along country roads, selling household goods, notions and small wares to farm families who rarely reached a town store. Posing with the pack made the trade itself the subject, which was unusual for a studio portrait of the period. The small sixth-plate size and plain leather case reflect how these images were sold to ordinary customers, and the name Myers stamped on the mat is one of the few clues to who handled the picture.
