The white card border is what sets this piece apart and gives the T206 series its nickname, distinguishing it from the colored-border tobacco sets issued alongside it. American Tobacco Company tucked these small cards into cigarette packs between 1909 and 1911, when tobacco firms used baseball pictures to attract buyers and encourage collecting. The series runs to more than 500 cards and covers players from both the major and minor leagues, making it a key record of the game's early twentieth-century stars. The color portrait printed over a halftone image shows the printing methods of the day.
