The white border is what sets this card apart within the T206 set, one of the best-known baseball card issues of the era. The American Tobacco Company printed these cards around 1909 to 1911 and tucked them into cigarette packs, where the stiff cardboard also helped protect the cigarettes. Collectors later sorted the set by border color and back advertisement, and this version, with its plain white frame around a color portrait, became the most common of those variations. The Library's catalog title reflects that naming convention rather than a label printed on the card itself.
