In 1914, Bethany College stood in Brooke County, West Virginia, where a small village spread along the ridges around the campus. That summer, war broke out in Europe, and news of the fighting reached a community that depended on the college and the surrounding farms. Coal fields and rail lines in the southern part of the state were expanding, but the northern panhandle followed a slower pace. Townspeople would have followed the war in the Wheeling newspapers, and many debated whether the United States should stay out of it.
