Bethany College sat on a hilltop in Brooke County, in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, in 1914. Alexander Campbell, a Scottish-born preacher, had founded it in 1840, and it was closely tied to the Disciples of Christ movement he helped lead. The village grew up around the campus, and most families there farmed, worked for the college, or served the church. Wheeling, a river port on the Ohio with steel, glass, and nail works, lay a short distance to the northwest and drew much of the region's industrial work and trade. For people in Bethany, the college and its Campbell heritage were what the place was known for.
