Few stage works of the 1910s tied a Pacific island setting so closely to romance as Richard Walton Tully's *Bird of Paradise*, and this silkscreen poster from the California Federal Art Project advertises a production of it. Tully's play, which opened on Broadway in 1912, follows a Hawaiian woman caught between her people's traditions and a foreign suitor, and the story later reached film audiences, including King Vidor's 1932 version. Its flat color fields and simplified shapes reflect the silkscreen method that WPA poster units favored, since it let artists produce inexpensive posters in quantity.
