Villa of Brule" shows a Brulé Lakota camp on the Brule River near Pine Ridge, South Dakota, with tipis and horses set against the riverbank. The photograph dates to about 1891, roughly a year after the Wounded Knee massacre of December 1890 drew national attention to the Pine Ridge reservation. Rather than a scene of conflict, it documents the ordinary arrangement of a camp, which is why it appears in Library of Congress resource guides on Native peoples. The print was deposited for copyright, and its albumen paper reflects the photographic methods of the 1890s.
