Feathered headdresses worn in ceremonial dances are the subject of this plate, which records regalia made and worn by Indigenous peoples of California before the missions and the gold rush transformed the region. Lithographs like this one appeared in the early nineteenth century, when European and American visitors to the Pacific coast were publishing illustrated accounts of the Indigenous communities they encountered. Such images were often drawn from sketches made in the field and later reproduced by stone printing, so they show a visitor's perspective as much as the original objects. The construction and ornament of the headdresses are worth studying closely, since they reflect the materials and craftsmanship of the communities that created them.
