Smoke and early light define this view of leaves burning at dawn at the Manzanar War Relocation Center in California's Owens Valley. Ansel Adams made the picture in 1943, when Japanese Americans, many of them citizens born in the United States, were held at the camp after being forced from their homes on the West Coast under Executive Order 9066. Adams's wartime photographs of Manzanar, later collected in the book *Born Free and Equal* (1944), recorded everyday routines like this one, and the ordinary work of clearing autumn leaves stands in quiet contrast to the fences and barracks around it.
