Antelope priests chant in this c1902 Detroit Photographic Company photochrom, which records a Hopi Snake Dance in Arizona. The Antelope and Snake societies performed the ceremony together, with Antelope priests providing the song while Snake priests handled live snakes, a rite meant to bring rain to the dry mesas. The photochrom process turned black-and-white photographs into full-color lithographic prints, which gave scenes like this a painted look that appealed to tourists and collectors of the period. Outside photographers made such images for a commercial market, so the picture shows a sacred ceremony as seen through the expectations of its audience.
